A Dog Buried Wrong
Polina Cosgrave

in a grain storage pit, now
an anonymous mutt in a ghost city
is gnawing on the bones of federal memories.
Relearning to bark the inexistent hymn,
to wiggle its faith, to bare
blunt teeth and have a bite
of a never coming tomorrow.
To be loyal. Loyal to what?

To the last sunset dripping
all over the cobblestone on the square
not red enough yet, filling the office
of an old cripple with the bloodiest
strokes. Until he is drowned
and forgotten. Until he is but a ghost
too. Howling, howling at the clockface

of the citadel moon.
