Assimilation
Natalia Knowlton Vásquez

I miss traveling.
New histories that evoke
new people to befriend
new cultures to soak.

Or is that problematic?

Can our similarities go beyond
drive-thru chicken nuggets?

Our winding roads lined up with
recipes, folk tales, superstitions
come to a halt
merge into one lane.
What will dominate,
what will be forgotten.

This could be Prague.
This could be any European city.
This could be a former colony that had to resemble Europe.
This could be anything
This could be all you ever wanted
This could cater to your lifestyle.

Natalia Knowlton Vásquez is a Chilean-Canadian poet, playwright and theatre maker based in London, UK. Reoccurring themes in her writing include Latin American and migrant identity, female sexuality, nostalgia and coming-of-age stories. Her writing is inherently feminist and political. Assimilation is her first published poem.
