by S. (from Somalia)

Part 1: Then

Sitting under the green tree,
thinking about the past, present and future.
Unsafe in my land, red in my land.

Thinking while feeling
cold and hearing the sound of the leaves brushing
against each other.

Now I’m in the future,
feeling green
under the tree.

Part 2: Now
I used to hear that beauty cost wealth.
By the Thames, hearing the waves of the cold water,
smelling perfumes
and hearing a man busking.

There are people around me,
the sun, and the green grass under my feet
yet I feel empty.

So quiet even though I’m in London,
city of life.
