For my fellow refugee mothers
Patricia

Sisters, we pass through a lot
but stay strong and believe.
The Home Office keeps home
in a tiny jar on the highest shelf
and when you reach for it
they ask pointless questions,
over and over again.

Sisters, we pass through a lot
but stay strong and believe.

You shake in a room with closed windows
unsure where they will send you,
unsure if your kids will only see you
on a phone, unsure of tonight,
unsure of tomorrow.

Sisters, we pass through a lot
but stay strong and believe.

Your story is your truth
say it proud and say it clear,
hold it high and say it loud-
even when they doubt you
when they try to twist and change you.

Sisters, we pass through a lot
but stay strong and believe.

Stand for who you are
find light in the faces of your children
the way they trust in you
the way they shrug off
what they go without.

Sisters, we pass through a lot
but stay strong and believe.

Take a deep breath, meet their eyes
and get your voice heard
you need to be free-
free to love your children
and build a life for yourself.
