Introduction to fiction

We seem to be in a constant state of moving. We move relentlessly from home to home, from job to job, or from country to country. Just as the writers in this section have gone through the brave and difficult journey of moving spaces of belonging, leaving behind what was once familiar to them. You might see yourself making journeys just as difficult. We all experience similar challenging transitions in our lives, from sorrow to happiness, fear to peace, and bad times to good times.

In a journey through a surreal blend of words that resonate with profound truths, you will encounter guardian angels with a flair for bitter realism, such as in the work of Ana Molman. Endangered pangolins will find their way to survival through the words of Benjamin Abtan, and Pegah Ouji’s innocent rabbits, in need of love and protection, may evoke somewhat familiar feelings.
Love, connection, and morality throughout the fluidity of life linger in each of the stories. A thread so visible between the deeply felt pieces of Shereen Pandit and Birgit Friedrich, both about a mother and a son, each so different, yet each holds a sense of devastation that might easily echo wherever you are.
Anitha Sundararajan’s and Kylie Wang’s beautiful imagery is sure to expand what one thought fiction could be, merging and blurring the lines of standard literature.
And there will be laughter in Temitayo Olofinlua’s uplifting story, offering a much-overlooked glimpse of humour into the life and struggles of being a migrant family.
There is a trail of connections and disconnections in this journal that deeply resonate, especially for those who find that home is no longer a place but people and experiences.
Welcome to the section of fiction that promises to move you, challenge you, and perhaps, in the end, encourage you to embrace the joy of movement itself.
