Lina grew up in Syria and moved to the UK in 2006, later earning her PhD in Languages and Intercultural Studies. Now an Assistant Professor in Research Methods at Heriot-Watt University, Lina draws on her own migration journey and her work with marginalised communities in both her academic research and creative writing. She focuses on representations of migration, as well as migrants’ and refugees’ experiences of home, identity and belonging. An advocate for the power of narrative in fostering inclusive multicultural communities, Lina’s research is grounded in decolonial methods that challenge mainstream approaches rooted in colonial legacies. A poet as well as a scholar, Lina combines decolonial approaches with creative expression to open up academic spaces for those traditionally marginalised within academia. By integrating creative writing into her research, she reimagines how knowledge can be shared and accessed, fostering inclusivity and challenging conventions within academic work.
