Picture
Maria was born in Lisbon and educated in Portugal and the UK. She is Associate Professor in Sociology at the School of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Leeds, UK. She has research interests in cosmopolitanism, arts-based methods, civil society, socio-ecological transformation, arts and displacement, and visual culture. A sociologist by training, she views sociology as a discipline that straddles scientific and artistic discourse and is interested in exploring what creative writing can offer to the sociological exploration of new ways of being with others in the world. Among her recent publications are Visual Politics in the Global South (Palgrave: 2023) and Artists, Cosmopolitanism, and the Civic Imagination (Routledge: forthcoming 2025).
