in their finest attire seek to please us,

The streets of the city empty, houses restless,
the orators silenced,
because today is the day that the barbarians arrive.

Baba, let's go, to declare that
today is the day, today is the day,
but long ago we have already arrived.

For a long time, we have been roaming through the city,
invisible

O imperador de coroa solene aguarda
na entrada da cidade para nos saudar,
para nos honrar,

Baba, let´s go, os cônsules e pretores
em seus melhores trajes querem nos agradar,

As ruas da cidade vazias, as casas inquietas,

Simone Toji is an anthropologist, author and playwright. She was born in São Paulo, Brazil, from a family of Japanese heritage. She has poems and short stories published in Brazilian collections. She was part of the 2018 Sesi-British Council Dramaturgy Centre, which resulted in the play Miragens (Sesi-SP Press). She also participated in the Laboratory of Playwriting for Women in 2019, having her piece ‘O que nos move’ published in the volume Pavio Vermelho Fogo (Giostri Press) in 2021. In this same year, her play Nébulas ou Pandemia C. Ovídio 1.9 was published in a collection organized by Tusp Press. Her most recent work, the ethnographic study The immensity of being singular was published in 2023 by HAU Books and Chicago University Press.

Simone Toji, antropóloga, autora e dramaturga. Ela nasceu em São Paulo, Brasil, de uma família de descendentes de japoneses. Possui poemas e contos publicados em coletâneas brasileiras. Foi integrante do Centro de Dramaturgia Sesi-British Council 2018, que resultou na peça Miragens (Editora Sesi-SP). Participou também do Laboratório de Dramaturgia de Mulheres em 2019, tendo sua peça ‘O que nos move’ publicada no volume Pavio Vermelho Fogo (Editora Giostri) em 2021. Neste mesmo ano, sua peça Nébulas ou Pandemia C. Ovídio 1.9 foi publicada em coletânea organizada pela Editora Tusp. Seu trabalho mais recente, o estudo etnográfico The immensity of being singular, foi publicado em 2023 pela HAU Books e Chicago University Press.
